I was raised to love, appreciate and respect nature. Whether landscapes, birds or animals, I experience pure joy as I work to preserve their beauty on canvas or watercolor paper. I was in 4th grade when I uncovered the secret to drawing is to look longer at the subject and less at my paper.
My favorite birthday present was a set of acrylic paints, and an easel that I took on a family vacation to Canada and painted the view of a sunset over the lake I saw from our cabin’s window.
I graduated from Boardman High School with secretarial training that helped me land a good paying job at GF Office Furniture. After saving up money to attend art school, I visited Carnegie Mellon but found out I only had enough to cover tuition for one year. Looking back I’m glad this happened, because I loved working for GF and was able to attend YSU at night to earn my degree in Business/Graphic Design. I was then able to receive a promotion as illustrator in the engineering department. Sadly, GF went out of business and hundreds of office and factory employees lost their jobs. This allowed me to enroll in YSU’s Entrepreneurship Program and upon completion I already had two clients and started Techni-Graphics, Inc.
Although my work cause me to put away my paints for a while, over the past 10 years I’ve taken steps to downsize my business and semi-retire which has freed up more time for painting and travel. The experience of running my advertising business and shooting professional photos comes in handy as I choose what I call “paint-worthy” subjects. I like painting from my own photos in my studio and have developed a new love for painting in plein air with my amazing artist friends.
I find it very enjoyable and challenging to switch between oils and watercolors, choosing the one I think will work best for the subject. My paintings are recognizable for their vivid and contrasting colors, many created while traveling from Ohio to Florida or Utah.
